Most agency SEO audits produce 90-page PDFs filled with fluff that no developer ever reads. A real technical audit should take 60 minutes and uncover the critical 5% of technical bottlenecks responsible for 95% of ranking suppression. Here is our exact agency battle-tested protocol.

1. The 60-Minute Audit Framework

Technical SEO is binary: either search engines can discover, render, index, and understand your content efficiently, or your content will underperform regardless of backlink strength.

Divide your 60-minute diagnostic session into four 15-minute sprints: Indexation & Crawlability (0–15m), Rendering & Performance (15–30m), Internal Architecture (30–45m), and Structured Data (45–60m).

2. Crawlability & Indexation Diagnostics

Start by inspecting your robots.txt, XML sitemaps, and canonical tags. Check for crawl traps such as infinite faceted navigation filters, duplicate trailing slash URLs, and accidental noindex headers on staging-to-production pushes.

Verify that your XML sitemap only contains 200 OK canonical URLs and is submitted directly in Google Search Console.

Robots.txt & Meta Directives Rule

Ensure critical CSS and JS assets are never disallowed in robots.txt, as Googlebot requires full asset access to render client-side pages properly.

3. Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS)

Google measures three direct ranking signals for real-world user experience:

MetricTarget ThresholdCommon ProblemAgency Fix
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)< 2.5 secondsHeavy unoptimized hero images / render-blocking CSSConvert to WebP/AVIF, prefetch critical assets, inline critical CSS
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)< 200 millisecondsLong main-thread JavaScript execution & bloated trackersCode-split JS bundles, defer non-critical third-party analytics
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)< 0.1 scoreImages and ads without explicit width/height dimensionsReserve aspect-ratio boxes and inject static dimension attributes

4. Internal Link Architecture & PageRank Flow

Internal links are the highway system through which Googlebot and PageRank distribute authority throughout your domain.

Ensure every commercial service page is accessible within 3 clicks of the homepage. Use descriptive, keyword-rich anchor text rather than generic labels like "click here" or "learn more".

5. Structured Data & Security Headers

Validate all JSON-LD schemas using Google's Rich Results Test. Every page should carry appropriate BreadcrumbList, Article, Product, or FAQPage markup to secure enhanced SERP real estate.

Confirm that HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) is active and SSL certificates resolve cleanly across all subdomains.

6. The 47-Point Priority Checklist Table

Use this quick prioritization rubric when delivering technical fixes to your development team:

  • ✓ Verify 0 orphan pages on key commercial URLs
  • ✓ Ensure canonical tags are self-referencing on canonical versions
  • ✓ Eliminate 301 redirect chains longer than 1 hop
  • ✓ Compress all media assets under 150KB
  • ✓ Enforce strict trailing-slash normalization via server rules
  • ✓ Inject structured schema markup across 100% of static and dynamic routes
